The Evolution of my Photography

In another blogpost I will reveal how much I spent over the past 6 years on photography... but this post is to just highlight the evolution of my photography equipment, a subsequent post will discuss how much it's cost me versus the priceless joy it brings to my life.

Now everyone started off with digital cameras and my family started out using Sony. I became a Sony cybershot fan for a while even though the quality tended to suck with very high noise indoors without flash. My first camera that I could actually call my own to use anywhere and take pictures... the famous... Sony Cybershot W1

This camera went everywhere with me. College. Clubbing. Travelling. The most memorable picture I have with this camera:

or

Once i finished college and finally got a job, i decided to take the plunge with the help of my friends Scotto / Kevin / and Trev and get myself a handy dandy DSLR and join the bunch. I remember debating between Nikon / Canon for the longest time. Scotto and Kevin had Nikons and Treiber had Canon. I told myself I will let the asian in me decide. The first deal to pop up on slickdeals is the one I will buy.

Lo and Behold, the Canon Rebel XT was on sale and that's what I got:

With this camera and this lens, there were just way too many pictures to choose from, for a year or two my album is littered with pictures using the Canon Rebel XT with 18-55mm stock lens.

I told myself once I got a DSLR that I would be done. My photography is complete. Little did I know the ginormous (and expensive) iceberg lurking beneath the waters. My first lens to buy outside of my stock lens was the mucho awesomo, yet expensivo Canon 50mm f/1.4 Prime Lens

man that lens was so difficult to work with. the focal range was really small and when you set it to f/1.4 the "bokeh" was really really strong.

but I would also be able to take some amazing pictures with the lens too....

Next on the evolutionary scale was taking my first plunge into Image Stabilization. I found I was having difficulty taking pictures indoors without the use of flash other than needing my 50mm f/1.4 so i decided to explore using Image Stabilization. My first one to get: Canon 28-135mm f/3.5 IS

Canon Rebel G

the reason why i wanted this lens was the 135mm and the IS feature. allowed me to get a bit more zoom to get up close and personal to what i'm shooting:

After that my setup was good for a very long time. I loved each and every lens I had but I found that I sometimes loved the 18-55mm for the wide angle spread that I would get over my 50mm / 28-135mm. But i loved Image Stabilization so.... I got the 18-55mm f/3.5 IS lens.

don't be fooled because it's just a plain-jane lens that comes stock with cameras. the new 18-55mm lens actually has some very good optics inside it. the build isn't all that great, but image improvement over the original 18-55mm is like night and day.

Then tinkering around with my 18-55mm I realized i like taking shots like the one above. Landscapes. But how can I make it seem more dramatic? At times I wish i could take physical steps back in order to engulf the full view of my shot, but alas, most of the times I was unable to. Then I tried out my friend's Canon 10-22mm lens and loved the mega wide-angle. I had never bought a $600 lens before and wasn't too keen on spending that much cash, so i went for a poor man's wide angle and bought a 0.42x adapter for my 18-55mm lens:

.40x HD Super Wide Angle Panoramic Macro Fisheye Lens For The Nikon D3X, D3, D2Xs, D2Hs, D2X, D2H, D3, D40, D40X, D50, D60, D70, D80, D90, D100, D200, D300, D700 Digital SLR Cameras Which Have Any Of These (18-55mm, 55-200mm, 50mm) Nikon Lenses

which allowed me to do pictures such as these:

and the more funner Fisheye Shots

which was a good lead-up to what i really wanted. A full blown ultra-wide angle lens. I sold my 50mm f/1.4 (it was time...) and got myself a Tokina 12-24mm f/4 Lens

and i absolutely LOVE this lens when I take landscape shots

Then on craigslist I found and schemed one of the best deals i could get... someone on craigslist was selling their Canon XS for an insanely low price... so low that I know i could have sold my Canon XT for the same price as the price i am about to pay for the XS.... so....

say hello to my new best friend.... =) and yes, just last week I was able to sell my Canon XT for the same exact price i paid to get the XS (giving away the stock lens that the XT came with was fine since the camera originally came with it) and an extra 18-55mm IS lens since the person i bought the XS from already came with the 18-55mm IS lens.

And yesterday... after much thinking about it and with the help of an insane deal that i found through Craigslist.... i went and bought my first L lens....

If it were any more epic i would have had to play the Empire Strikes Back theme as you scrolled through those pictures....

i have yet to take it on a phototrip.... maybe if the weather holds up this weekend I will find myself roaming around the bay area with that mammoth of a lens

hopefully i can get a good a shot as this:
