My first 24 hours with the Google Chromebook CR-48

For the past 24 hours I have been using (and loving) the new google chromebooks that I am helping to make even better for the company...

One of the few and the proud that are beta testers, it has become everything I had hoped it to be and has exceeded my expectations of a laptops based mostly as a "cloud" computer.

Little is known of what is inside the netbook, but what I do know is that it does not take much to power this baby. I can see a chromebook coming out thinner than ANY laptop ever made, and at a remarkable cheaper price than other laptops who claim to be "small form factor" as well. With the majority of the pieces that add bulk / price to a laptop off the actual physical unit, google may actually be onto something here. what helps the world is if everyone is connected to the internet. information travelling everywhere digitally. The problem with that is not everyone can afford even the cheapest of laptops out there, or the ones that can afford the cheapest laptop cannot do anything outside of logging in and moving at a sluggish pace. With these chromebooks being so responsive, runs incredibly cool (i hear no fan so it can only mean that the hardware is really not that intensive yet everything runs smoothly), I can see them getting everyone on planet a chance to access the internet.... the last and final frontier of the dot com industries.

With that, here are my first takes of the chrome book, both likes and dislikes:

Likes
  • The simplicity of the netbook. It is what it is. It gets me on the internet, i got a keyboard to type as normal, it's light, no flash, no programs installed that i didn't want installed, light, and lightnight smooth
  • Performance. this laptop is very very responsive. I am almost amazed at how well it responds to anything I want to do from switching windows and runnings apps (easy when the app is on a cloud somewhere in the internet)
  • The Chrome OS was so easy to use, why? because it's chrome the browser. I commend them for releasing the browser ahead of time, so once you open up a chrome book, you know exactly how to use everything. All the shortcuts and strengths/speed of the browser is now the main focus of the laptop. It really works and it works well. I've switched to chrome on every computer at my house and at work, and have loved it ever since. it really is the fastest browser, most responsive, and (hopefully) good enough security.
  • Battery Life: I charged it once I got the laptop then have been running off battery ever since. I"m at 25% as of right now but I have been using it all day.
  • Internet everywhere you go: equipped with 3G internet I can now use the internet everywhere I go, and with the laptop only weighing 3.75 lbs, it is really easy to carry around anywhere I want to go.
  • Full Sized Keyboard for the win. Fingers don't feel cramped at all even when I'm writing this blog post.
Dislikes
  • Alright now as good as this is, there are also some dislikes I have so far: The trackpad is freaking humongous. I like it and dislike it at the same time. It makes traversing throughout the screen really easy BUT my thumb palms keep brushing up against the trackpad causing the mouse to either tap or move around the screen. I have had to go back and retype certain parts of this blog post because of errant trackpad issues.
  • The Wireless issues: I am pretty sure this has to do with my router and range, but I am able to reach my network just fine using my other laptops / xbox / ps3 but for some reason the netbook has issues connecting. sometimes it works, other times i have had to retry and reconnect once again. but only happens here in my room, everywhere else has been fine in the house and at starbucks
  • With that said, my last gripe is that this is classified as a TRUE NETbook. And when I say NETbook i mean NETbook, meaning the majority functions of the laptops require being on the internet. WHich is great since we have Verizon 3G data network, but poo if you can't connect at times, for instance here in my room. When I can't connect, The netbook is literally just a glorified clock and battery indicator until I can connect to my wireless internet and use the netbook to its fullest.

All in all, this googlechromebook is getting an A in my book. the first 24 hours have been great, and I plan to start using the more advanced features and try out Verizon 3G network. Stay Tuned for more!!!
