SAN FRANCISCO (Dow Jones)--Apple Inc. (AAPL) legal representatives asked Microsoft Corp (MSFT) recently to "stop running" advertisements suggesting Apple's computers are expensive, Microsoft Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner said.

The interaction has emboldened Microsoft, which plans to continue with its so-called "Laptop Hunter" marketing campaign after learning, however indirectly, how effective the advertisement's underlying message is in rankling Apple.

"We're just going to keep running them and running them and running them," Turner said during a Wednesday address to Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference 2009.

Turner said the call from Apple took place two weeks ago, and the attorneys asked that the company no longer run the ads because the company had "lowered our prices."

Microsoft already had an inkling the new campaign that began in March and was a follow-up to commercials starring comedian Jerry Seinfeld. In May, Brandindex, which measures the strength of corporate brands, says Microsoft's so-called "value perception" increased while Apple's decreased.

An Apple spokesman had no immediate comment.

apple notorious for slandering microsoft in their ad compaigns for YEARS asked to stop??? wait... what???? are you serious??? they throw one punch back at someone who has been punching them in the nutsack all these years with the "i'm a pc and i'm a mac" campaign???

childish i say....

now, i've been a windows users for a very long time... i never really slandered apple except my ignorant years in college (sorry trev) but both companies have gone a long way... apple has definitely the upper hand and lets just say vista took microsoft down a few points.... but after using Windows 7 and with the way the economy is rolling... apple hasn't really done much other than raise their prices or add one or two new whistles and keeping the price the same... for using the same hardware as PC's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i mean, sure, in the past okay, i can give it to them for saying they are using IBM PowerPC RISC processors which if u've ever taken an architecture course was way better than what amd or intel had to offer... just not enough research into pushing the envelope... but now that they switched why are prices still the same?!?!?! i don't get it... i really don't... so that's what microsoft has, or i should say PC... they have the power to roll w/ the economy... windows 7 is practically FREE right now... 40 bux for a new OS? hell yeah sign me up (yes, i will be purchasing windows 7) versus $1K for a mac? yeah... no thanks... its a great system, and i use ipods, i want an iphone, and OSX is great and all... but its not like Windows is garbage.... i implore anyone who has a decent PC right now to try Windows 7... u'd be very surprised to feel how seemless and repsonsive it is... i'd use both if i didn't hate swithcing all the time.... i have a hard enough time switching from windows to linux here at work... let alone adding OSX to the mix....

but yeah, that's just my geek rant for the day

yeah i was surprised when i read that. This is chance for apple to ramp up their commercials. I'd love to see an ad war between the two. It could be fun.

I've heard nothing but good things about windows 7 but alas... i'm fully converted to apple when i bought my mac mini this summer. But this would be a good time to try out boot camp eh?
