Today I watched two Tom Cruise movies (yeah i know... how did i survive?) Well to end my staycation i decided that the best way to spend it is doing what i love best, which is to watch movies. Lately, I have been hankering for a good (and i mean GOOD) sci-fi movie; browsing through XBMC i found Oblivion and decided to give it a shot. The title is catchy, though I will admit, when i first heard this movie, i expected it to be based off a video game... go figure... same thing happened with Avatar.
The movie had all the right elements of a sci-fi movie; fancy gadgets and robots, aliens, beautiful CG backgrounds, a mystery unfolding itself to the main character along with the audience, and attractive women abounds. Andrea Riseborough, for whatever reason, I found to be very attractive and yet I couldn't figure out why. I believe it has a lot to do with her mannerism more than her looks because there isn't really any clear defining features of her but the way her character is portrayed, you couldn't help but like her as the movie went on. Then there's Olga Kurylenko (yes the bond-girl) the last I saw her was in Quantum of Solace and she has stayed as beautiful as ever in this movie, but man, what a name!! Olga?!?!? alright that's enough on my mini-crushes on the characters in this movie and now onto what i thought of it.
This movie..... okay... i have a LOT of patience for movies, i can stand sifting through snoozers because sometimes that's what i'm in the mood for. I watched Oblivion on a warm sunday afternoon with just me and my dog and was rather enjoying the slow pace of it all. I do admire the cinematography and how the sets are made but the storyline started out great and just completely fell apart towards the end. I don't want to give away any spoilers but for me, this movie felt like it was 70% good of a sci-fi movie and then from that moment, it just started going downhill really fast until the ending left me in a great big BAH THIS SUCKS!!!! moment... (ironically enough, that was the point in the movie where Morgan Freeman shows himself... i like him as an actor... but his character and how his role played out in the movie is just.... beyond me....) obviously it's a blockbuster movie, so consider this a spoiler or not... but the "good guys" win... that's not too unpredictable... but how they won and who they won against... i would have to say that of all the major villains in a movie, the main villain in THIS particular movie has to be the BIGGEST DUMBASS in the HISTORY of villains. how this villain even survived to get to the point OF this movie is what left me questioning myself the whole time the ending credits were rolling; not to mention i soon realized how this movie parallels scientology a bit too much... when that realization came about i began to throw up a little inside as the movie bore on through some very unsatisfying ending that i still can't fathom.
want to know what's the weird thing? well it's 11:56pm on my last day of staycation and as i'm writing this post, I actually have OBLIVION on in the background (yes, i'm watching it again...) why do you ask? because i said the first 70% is a good sci-fi movie; the pacing is incredibly slow; and i want to fall asleep... the combination of the pace and the fact that i have confidence that i will fall asleep before the movie starts to suck really bad is what i'm banking on...
now that was Tom Cruise movie number 1.... leaving me with a really shitty feeling inside... so much so that i decided to go suffer through a bike-ride just to complete my 100 mile goal for the week...
when i got back, i realized i only had a few precious hours left of my weekend/vacation and what did i decide to do? Give Tom Cruise another chance that's what. I watched Jack Reacher. I actually laughed at myself that in both movies, his character's name is Jack. Jack Harper and Jack Reacher.
What was even funnier was that the names could actually be switched and it would STILL work (shows how generic and forgettable both those names are). Jack Reacher ended up being a pretty good movie. A myster-thriller-crime-solving type movie (another one of my favorites genres) and this movie didn't disappoint. Might I also add that i do also have a thing for Rosamund Pike who now i just realized was ALSO a Bond Girl. Wow, Olga and Rosamund... pretty awesome... so anyhow, the storyline of Jack Reacher was so convoluted that I actually liked it as it was unwravelling itself. It didn't fall into too many "predictable" traps that I usually find in these types of movies, although Tom Cruises character did play a little bit TOO much of a badass in my opinion to make it seem believable. Robert Duvall was a nice casting but I felt the villains were just a litttle too easily killable in my opinon.... Tom Cruise can be a badass, but he's no Steven Segal where he he can kill anyone who is armed way better than he is (automatic machine gun versus butterknife? no problem!) But Jack Reacher proved to be a movie that calmed down my anger for Tom Cruise as for now.
If you like murder-myster-solving type thrillers I would recommend Jack Reacher to those who haven't watched it yet. It's worth a watch. As for Oblivion.... watch it for the cinematography, appreciate that, and the relationship with the female characters and the lead character... other than that, the rest of the movie is a dud not worth watching the end of it once the whole sci-fi mystery has revealed itself. i won't lie... Oblivion towards the end made me wonder, and on MULTIPLE occasions, whether or not Tom Cruise was going to wake up and realize this was all a dream... if the movie had ended up that way I would have sworn off every Tom Cruise movie for the rest of my life... so thankfully it didn't end that way...
and with that.... staycation is now over... tomorrow..... **sighs**
